Steve Edwards, head of Portfolio Construction and Cross Asset Strategy (PC|XS) in Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Global Investment Office, has built a career defined by curiosity, resilience and a passion for helping clients navigate complex markets. He leads a team that designs multi-asset solutions, informs strategic and tactical allocations, and partners closely with Financial Advisors to bring clarity amid complexity.
A Multidisciplinary Foundation
Steve’s multifaceted background mirrors the breadth of his current responsibilities. Raised in Pennsylvania, he grew up assisting in his family’s small business, developing an early appreciation for finance and problem-solving. As a student at Princeton University, he initially pursued chemical engineering before pivoting to history, supplementing his studies with economics, computer science, math and Spanish. He describes that interdisciplinary path as formative: Each field sharpened a different muscle—quantitative rigor, narrative thinking and pattern recognition—and together they underpin his approach to markets.
Outside the classroom, he was a member of the golf team, where he forged lasting friendships and learned the value of perseverance. Writing his senior thesis on Jonathan Edwards, a family relation and Princeton’s former president, further deepened his appreciation for intellectual discipline and perspective, which continues to shape his work.
A Career Built on Adaptability
After graduation, Steve worked briefly in consulting before spending time in Venezuela on a year of service. The experience taught him humility, empathy and the universal importance of listening—lessons he presently applies to client conversations.
His professional path then led him to the investment firms Bridgewater Associates and Spruce Private Investors, where he worked on systematic investing and portfolio construction. His entrepreneurial side emerged when he co-founded Frontera Management, a global macro strategy firm. That phase taught him how systems break, how markets surprise and how humility is non-negotiable.
He joined Morgan Stanley in 2015, initially building quantitative infrastructure for the Firm’s Outsourced Chief Investment Office. Over time, Steve assumed increasing responsibilities, culminating in his current role as head of Portfolio Construction and Cross Asset Strategy and a member of the Global Investment Committee, a group of senior investment professionals focused on sourcing diverse perspectives from across the Firm to deliver investment views to Wealth Management clients. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the Stamford CFA Society.
Collaboration and Perspective
What sets Steve apart is his belief that investing is not “math plus alpha,” but “math and alpha in service of human purpose.” He is known for pairing quantitative precision with a keen appreciation for the art of investing. He emphasizes collaboration across teams and highlights the strength of the Firm’s platform as a differentiator for clients.
“The markets will always keep you humble,” he says. “There’s always more to learn, and there’s beauty in the fact that investing is both science and art. My role is to help Advisors bring those pieces together for their clients in a way that’s practical, scalable and impactful.”
Life Beyond the Model
Outside the markets, Steve is quietly ambitious in his personal goals. A passionate hiker and runner, he has a goal to reach the highest natural point in every U.S. state. He also enjoys a wide variety of music—from classical to jazz to bluegrass—and landscape photography, and shares images with friends and colleagues, sometimes using them as metaphors in strategy conversations.
Steve strives to bring the same kind of clarity, patience and curiosity to his home as he does to his work. He credits his family with grounding him, reminding him that life isn’t just about markets—it's about investing in others and bringing about their flourishing.
