Public to Private Equity in the United States: A Long-Term Look
Institutional investors have shifted their allocations in U.S. equities from public to private markets over the past 40 years, causing reverberations for investors, executives, and policymakers. We examine key trends in public and private equity, specifically buyouts and venture capital. We review their size, M&A patterns, and returns. A lot has changed since we wrote about this in 2020, including the end of “easy money,” tougher exits, increased access to capital, and surging capital needs.
