A DAY IN THE LIFE
I selected Fixed Income at Morgan Stanley because…
junior employees—including Summer Analysts—were given real responsibility.
Everyone took pride in striving to be the best, but without arrogance or pretentiousness.
As
a Fixed Income Summer Analyst…
it was important to show initiative and work well within a team. I learned
to be an entrepreneur, coming up with my own ideas and market opinions. I helped
create daily market updates for client distribution, taking into account the
latest movements in the markets. Being detail-oriented and strong in quantitative
analysis and creative thinking was essential, but my liberal arts studies were
also helpful.
A typical day…
involved working with a trader, with mornings spent reading overnight news,
sending out inventory levels and reviewing daily analytics packages. Once trading
began, I assisted with trade executions and generated trade ideas. After market
close, I helped ensure risk was properly booked and evaluated, ran profit and
loss (P&L)
reports, and updated inventory levels. I then worked on upcoming client presentations,
projects or analyses.
The best part of my summer experience at Morgan Stanley was…
when a manager who realized I was particularly interested in his product area
helped place me with key team members and analysts on the desk. The Summer
Analyst Program also offered lunch events where I could hear from and speak
with management.
