A DAY IN THE LIFE

I chose to do my Industrial Placement at Morgan Stanley because…
it is one of the best investment banks and is known for its talented, knowledgeable staff.

I selected Treasury…
because it seemed like a great place to begin a career in finance. Treasury plays a significant role in maintaining Morgan Stanley’s financial stability due to its involvement in the firm's ongoing liquidity and capital positions. I believed that the wide scope of Treasury would help me understand the big picture of how the firm operates as a whole.

My role on the team was…
multifaceted—I worked in capital planning and the short-term funding desk. Both roles were very different: Capital planning was more project-oriented, and the latter involved daily tasks across interest rate hedging, currency management and liquidity investment.

A typical day…
during my funding desk rotation began by reporting to the desk on the fixed income trading floor. I completed daily tasks and participated in ad hoc exercises. I was involved in liquidity investment management, senior reporting, liquidity reconciliation, risk review, currency and basis management, and strategic projects.

To get the most out of an Industrial Placement…
listen attentively to what your colleagues say, read a lot, ask questions and always offer to help others. During downtime I read up on the different functions Treasury managed; it helped me understand the business more quickly.

The best part of my experience at Morgan Stanley…
was the people. My biggest fear in coming to a big investment bank was feeling left out—the people who surrounded me on a daily basis, including high-ranking officers, my manager and other analysts, were all fantastic to work with and very approachable.
