A DAY IN THE LIFE
I chose to do my Industrial Placement at Morgan Stanley because… of its excellent reputation and its superior IT division. I wanted to gain new
technical skills and learn more about the business.
I selected Technology…
because I was interested in developing and implementing cutting-edge technologies
that could potentially be used by thousands of end users. It was a great opportunity to learn from some
of the world’s most talented technologists.
My role on the team was…
to develop an application that was a test harness for a particular tool. I
worked with core financial products and designed the application to send appropriate
trade messages to the tool. While constructing the application from database
level to user interface, I worked with the business unit and made sure that
any design issues were handled in the early stages of development. I also provided
user support.
To get the most out of my Industrial Placement…
I needed to have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and a genuine
interest in technologies, along with an eye for detail. It also helped to be
approachable and communicate succinctly.
The best part of my experience at Morgan Stanley was…
working in a global environment and learning to solve challenging financial
problems, from meeting business needs to designing, programming or testing
the latest software. I also enjoyed the team environment and having responsibility
in developing new technologies.
