Leveraging our expertise in quantitative analysis, Morgan Stanley worked with New York Cares to enhance the organization’s focus on volunteer engagement and efficiency among staff.
New York Cares is the city's largest volunteer management organization, mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service at 1,300 nonprofits, city agencies and public schools.

The 2009 Strategy Challenge team worked with New York Cares to develop a system to determine how to best allocate its resources in order to amplify volunteer engagement and increase staff efficiency—the two components deemed most critical to the organization’s success.

Morgan Stanley developed a quantitative decision-making model to provide the organization with transparency into how much time was being spent on each of New York Cares’ activities and what each of these activities was ultimately costing the organization.

New York Cares implemented the Morgan Stanley team’s strategic recommendations and experienced dramatic results, and more volunteers are now serving more New Yorkers in need.
  • The number of filled volunteer slots has increased by over 50 percent since 2009
  • An increased number of volunteers are participating in more projects, with an 11 percent increase in retained leaders and a 7 percent increase in volunteer engagement
New York Cares summarized the effectiveness of the decision-making model by saying: "Overall, the cost analysis and recommendations from the Morgan Stanley team have become ingrained in our office culture and practices during the past five years. We repeatedly use the tool the team created. It has helped us not only identify efficiencies that led to program growth, but also to better explain our costs and structure to partners."
