Your Opportunity as an Analyst in the Financial Control Group (FCG)
An overview of this program’s objectives and how you can benefit

The Financial Control Group (FCG) manages the firm’s risk by implementing financial controls over the firm’s business activities. FCG is responsible for Morgan Stanley’s financial records, ensuring that the assets and liabilities of the firm are properly controlled, and providing accurate and timely financial information to senior management as well as to statutory and regulatory bodies.

FCG acts as CFO to the business units, providing profitability analyses, business plans, and budgets supporting current and future business initiatives. FCG partners with Information Technology and Operations to establish a solid business infrastructure.

The Analyst Program in the Financial Control Group
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The FCG Analyst Program runs in both January and July. Analysts begin their career with a six-week training program. The six weeks are comprised of classroom- and project-based training to provide Analysts with business, technical, and professional knowledge.

The program’s curriculum includes:

  • Orientation to the firm
  • An overview of the securities industry
  • Senior speaker seminars
  • Extensive product knowledge
  • Accounting and systems training
  • Desk visits
  • Project assignments
  • Social and networking events to build the Analyst's professional network

Upon successful completion of the training program, Analysts join assigned departments in a control, project management or operational function. In addition, Analysts are assigned peer advisors and mentors to aid in a smooth transition into the organization.

As an Analyst in the Financial Control Group, you will be placed within one of the following departments:

Institutional Securities Group
As an Analyst within ISG, you will be exposed to a multi-faceted and diverse business, supporting traditional Sales & Trading products, such as Fixed Income, Equity, and Investment Banking. Analysts may get involved in the expansion of more niche businesses such as Prime Brokerage or Securitized Products as well as new firm acquisitions. As part of the Business Control Group, which is the core support team within ISG, an Analyst will gain financial and key risk-control expertise in functions such as Revenue, Balance Sheet, Legal Entity, and Accounting Disclosures. The day-to-day responsibilities depend on the functional group assigned.

Global Controllers
An Analyst coming into the Global Controller organization is joining an integral part of the firm that is comprised of groups that oversee and manage external reporting, accounting standards and controls, regulatory relations, compliance and reporting, valuation review, SOX compliance, and finance operational risk. These groups provide the firm with technical support concerning regulatory and accounting matters, and work with various accounting bodies and regulators to help determine future standards and regulations for the industry.  The Global Controller function also leads the Legal Entity Program and the Merger Integration Group, oversees the implementation of CSE/Basel II, partners with and provides controller support for Human Resources, Morgan Stanley Bank, Treasury, Global Wealth Management products, and the overall regional and branch network. The regional and branch controller support provides accounting and reporting services to their respective regional units. The functions provided by the Global Controller teams are firmwide and global in nature, creating strong working partnerships across Finance and throughout the rest of our organization.

Developing Your Career
What you can anticipate as you make progress and after completing the program
