Their potential is taken very seriously by senior management, which is why the division’s Chief Operating Officer is personally responsible for supervising recruitment and the day-to-day management of our Associate and Summer Associate classes. Successful Associates can and do progress from the program to secure management positions within Sales & Trading.

How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The Associate Program provides an opportunity to develop and master the analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills you would need to develop an exciting and rewarding career on Wall Street. With a flat structure and an open trading floor, you would be collaborating with and learning from some of the most successful professionals in the industry. You would be there when the ideas are born, when they are pitched to clients and colleagues, and when they are executed. From the initial concept through marketing, issuance, pricing, and secondary trading, you may be exposed to it all. There simply is no better way to experience the markets. As an Associate, you would have the opportunity to experience the full breadth of the division and find the best fit for your interests and skills.

As your experience grows, you may specialize in one of the following areas:

  • Sales Building long-term client relationships, developing and presenting investment ideas, selling, and cross-selling the firm’s products
  • Trading Developing and executing trading ideas, and supporting market-making activities with analysis
  • Structuring Conceiving and modeling new forms of transactions across the credit spectrum
  • Strategy Analyzing market fundamentals and liaising with researchers to develop investment recommendations for internal and external clients
  • Finance Work with issuer clients to provide innovative solutions to capital-raising needs through securitization of consumer assets, mortgages, bonds, loans, and other financial instruments

Launching Your Career
The initial training that you receive on starting the program

The Associate Program will begin with a comprehensive five-week training program that includes firmwide training with Associates across the Institutional Securities Division. The curriculum typically will cover:

  • Market knowledge training
  • Product and technical training
  • Professional development
  • Financial accounting
  • Licensing and registration

Throughout the Associate Program, you would have significant exposure to senior managers through information sessions and other organized events. You may also benefit from networking opportunities with peers and colleagues.

Developing Your Career
What you can anticipate as you make progress and after completing the program

As part of your integration into Sales & Trading, you will be assigned a mentor who can help ease your transition from academia to the corporate environment. The mentor provides career guidance, serves as a sounding board, and helps connect the Associate to the broader Morgan Stanley network. The firm also provides ongoing training that will support you as you work to advance in your career.

Selected applicants will have the opportunity to meet with Morgan Stanley professionals both on-campus and in our offices. Candidates are evaluated on their ability to succeed at both the Associate level and at the officer level.

 The Summer Associate Program in Sales & Trading
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The 10-week  Sales & Trading Summer Associate Program will provide you with a unique opportunity to experience the culture of the firm and the intensity and energy of the trading floors.

The program typically features:

  • Classroom training
  • Two placements within the division
  • Rotations to other desks across Sales & Trading
  • Senior management speaker series
  • Networking events
  • A mid-summer review

Your placements will enable you to develop a detailed appreciation of the role of the Associate as well as give you broad exposure to the diverse products and functions across Sales & Trading. You may also benefit from the support of a mentor as well as numerous opportunities for networking.  Working on the trading floor, you will generally have daily contact with senior management, both through learning-on-the-job and in the many information sessions and meetings that are an essential part of the summer experience. Successful Summer Associates may receive a full-time offer at the end of the summer.
