As a Public Finance Analyst, you will get hands-on experience in how capital is raised to fund public sector and non-profit projects, including how municipal bond issues are structured and how the tax-exempt market works. You will get to work in a fast-paced and intense environment where you will learn to analyze and interpret complex information in a timely manner. You may work primarily with municipal entities (states, counties, cities, authorities, and agencies) on general infrastructure projects or in close collaboration with our industry specialists. In the process, you will gain valuable knowledge of the fixed income markets and transaction execution skills, which will prepare you for any number of careers in financial services.

The Analyst Program in Public Finance
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Morgan Stanley’s Public Finance Division has a two-year Analyst Program. While the program is for two years, many of our outstanding Analysts are asked to stay on to continue a full career at Morgan Stanley or encouraged to look at the firm’s other divisions for new opportunities.

During your two years at Morgan Stanley, you will be functioning as an investment banking analyst in the Public Finance Group. You will be an integral member of one of the client groups listed above, serving municipal, not-for-profit, corporate, and other tax-exempt issuers with their capital market needs.  You will assist in transactions from start to finish. Marketing tasks include monitoring sector trends, tracking the benefits of individual transactions based on market fluctuations, and executing sophisticated fixed income analysis for proposed transactions. You will also work closely with senior bankers in preparing both written and oral presentations for major clients. Once an assignment is mandated, you will provide a full range of services: from developing and preparing credit information for formal bond rating agency presentations, to assessing a variety of credit enhancement structures, to reviewing legal and other offering documents, and reviewing product alternatives as pricing approaches. During the final pricing and closing process, the analyst is critically important in providing final numerical schedules, sale profile analysis, and all closing calculations and documentation.

The knowledge of the fixed income markets and the transaction execution skills you will gain will prepare you for any number of careers within Morgan Stanley and the investment banking arena.

The initial training that you receive on starting the program

Analysts joining Public Finance begin with a comprehensive, five-week training program that includes firm-wide training with other Analysts from the Institutional Securities Group along with Sales & Trading product training. The program also includes extensive financial product and market knowledge training, product talks, and professional development classes, as well as financial accounting. All licensing and registration will generally occur during this period. You will have networking opportunities with peers and colleagues as well as frequent interaction with senior managers through information sessions and other organized events.
