 The Associate Program in Private Wealth Management

An overview of this program’s objectives and how you can benefit

The PWM Associate Training Program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to build a business within Morgan Stanley’s Private Wealth Management division. Associate Investment Representatives work closely with key individuals and specialists from across the firm to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Morgan Stanley platform, and how it can be leveraged to effectively service PWM clients. 

Launching a Career in Private Wealth Management

The 16-week PWM Associate Training Program takes place at Morgan Stanley’s worldwide headquarters in New York.    With specific emphasis on sales skills, financial acumen and Firm culture, course highlights include:

  • Determining factors surrounding and defining the client’s wealth including personal/family objectives, family structure, investment knowledge, sources of wealth, structure of financial holdings, and liquidity needs
  • Integrated Wealth Analysis and Structuring—estate tax planning, income tax planning, trust and insurance solutions, and stock option taxation and analytics
  • Asset Allocation and Investment Strategy— formulating strategies to meet the client’s goals and objectives, and identifying appropriate asset classes and specific investments in the investor’s portfolio
  • Portfolio Construction—determining implementation vehicles such as separate accounts, mutual funds, ETFs, partnerships, closed-end funds, and structured products

Program objectives include:

  • Well-rounded knowledge of the Firm’s platform, products and solutions
  • Enhanced sales and client relationship skills
  • Multiple securities industry certifications including the Series 7, 66 and 31
  • Exposure to key members of Morgan Stanley and PWM
  • Access to continued specialized coaching in all aspects of the Associate role  
  • Completion of team and individual project work including managing a portfolio, developing a business plan, pitching to mock clients, and generating viable prospects

Career Development

Ongoing training is fostered through various educational programs sponsored by Morgan Stanley’s Learning and Development team, and one-on-one support from the IR Development Team.

Requirements

Applicants for the PWM Associate Program must be on target to complete an MBA program by May/June 2009.

Selection Process

Candidates are encouraged to attend various Morgan Stanley PWM on-campus interview events, career fairs, and/or presentations. All applications are screened by members of PWM Management.

  • The first interview is led by a PWM Investment Representative and usually takes place on your business school campus
  • The second round of interviews takes place in New York, is led by various Investment Representatives, and whenever possible, the Regional Manager

 The Summer Associate Program in Private Wealth Management
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Summer Associates gain direct insight into the role of a PWM Investment Representative (IR), and receive specific introductory training on the skills necessary to succeed at Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management.

The 10-week PWM Summer Associate Training Program takes place at Morgan Stanley’s worldwide headquarters in New York.  With specific emphasis on sales skills, financial acumen and Firm culture, course highlights include:  

  • Introduction to Morgan Stanley and Private Wealth Management
  • Introduction the Firm’s platform, products and solutions
  • Extensive instruction on the past and present state of the markets domestically and abroad
  • Exposure to Management and influential individuals throughout PWM and Morgan Stanley
  • Intensive sales training courses and exercises
  • Team and individual project work, including managing a portfolio, developing a business plan, pitching to mock clients, and generating viable prospects through multiple mediums

Requirements

Typically, Summer Associates take part in the program between their first and second year of business school.  To qualify for the PWM Summer Associate Program, you must be on target to complete your first year of business school.
