Associates often start in our generalist Associate “pool” where you gain exposure to a variety of products, services and clients. If you have experience or interest in a particular sector, we would try to accommodate your preference in making project assignments. The roles and responsibilities vary by department, but typically include:
Launching Your Career The IBD Associate Program begins with an intensive four-week training program in
At the end of the training program, we would expect you to take your regulatory (Series 7) examination, which is mandatory. We would help you prepare for this testing. In addition to quantitative training, Morgan Stanley realizes the importance of its people and believes in giving them the necessary tools to grow and develop in their role at the firm. Lean deal teams afford you the opportunity to work closely with senior officers, and informal networking events allow you to build a network of contacts among their colleagues and throughout the organization. The firm encourages open lines of communication between professionals at all levels. We will also support you in gaining additional financial/business qualifications that are relevant to your goals. Developing Your Career The first year is designed to give you an understanding of how our bankers determine a client’s needs and how they meet their strategic objectives. This will enable you to build upon their broadened skill base. The firm provides ongoing training and mentoring that supports you as you work to advance your career to the next level. At the end of your Associate tenure, you could be considered for promotion to Vice President. If you continue to excel you can potentially move on to become an Executive Director and ultimately a Managing Director. Is Investment Banking Right for You?

The 10-week Morgan Stanley IBD Summer Associate Program is an opportunity for MBA and JD candidates to experience the culture and atmosphere of Morgan Stanley and take on the roles of full-time Associates. The majority of the Summer Associate class joins the Associate “pool” alongside full-time Associates. However, if you have experience or interest in a particular sector, we would try to accommodate your preference in making project assignments. All assignments are executed by teams that typically consist of three or four people including senior bankers. All professionals are on several teams concurrently. Team assignments may last from a few days to several months. The program will give you a realistic view of investment banking as you spend your summer working on a variety of transactions and business development initiatives. You will build a strong foundation in the basic skills of financial problem solving, negotiation and execution, and gain experience in marketing the firm’s products and services effectively. The program features a number of social events to facilitate networking and to discuss career opportunities. You will also hear weekly speakers and attend networking lunches. All Summer Associates are assigned a senior and junior mentor. Those who are in the “pool” are also assigned a pool mentor. Requirements Candidates should be working toward completion of an M.B.A. or J.D. degree.
