The Technology Training Program is designed to develop highly skilled and motivated technologists who partner with our businesses to solve complex problems through the use of technology. Trainees are recruited globally for a particular office – New York, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Budapest, Shanghai, or Mumbai. The broad and comprehensive skills acquired during the 15-week program allow you to be placed in challenging roles throughout Technology – such as business application development, application infrastructure development and enterprise engineering. We currently have over 3,000 IT professionals employed globally, covering all major business development and support functions. The Technology Training Program The Technology Training Program is held twice a year in February and August. The program curriculum includes intensive technology training in application development or computing infrastructure, orientation to the firm, an overview of the securities industry, and professional skills workshops. Technical training curriculum varies by track, and includes instruction on proprietary technologies, a Senior Speaker Series and financial products training. You will spend the last three to four weeks of the program on projects addressing real business needs. These projects provide a smooth transition to future work groups. Throughout the program, you will interact with colleagues in order to develop a strong network within the Technology division. The Technology Training Program offers a tailored and individualized approach to placement. Throughout the program, you will meet managers to learn about available and appropriate roles. Your preferences are then weighed along with the preference of hiring managers and business priorities. Launching Your Career The Technology Training Program offers three tracks aligned with your specific background and interests: The Distributed Systems Development track takes a deep, fast look at a range of software engineering technologies. The emphasis is on design, architecture and rationale, with the intention of developing excellent design and programming skills. When exploring languages, the focus is on standard idioms, style, compiler and run-time implementation; when exploring databases, the focus is on performance, optimization, and data quality; and when exploring operating systems, the focus is on internals and architecture. Advanced techniques are explored throughout. The curriculum includes intensive and advanced work in C++, Java, Linux/UNIX, Windows, Perl, .NET, C#, object-oriented analysis and design, relational databases, middleware, XML/SOAP, messaging, systems architecture, systems integration and firm-specific tools. The Application Development and Integration track is a broad-based program in applied technology. The focus is on developing skills to build, integrate, deploy, and extend software systems to support our business. The program explores technologies that enable applications to be built across a diverse set of platforms: for example, running jobs and accessing data on the Mainframe, performing computation on a Linux server, and presenting results throughout a web client or C# GUI on a trader’s PC. The curriculum includes intensive and advanced work in Java, relational databases, web technology, XML/SOAP, .NET, C# and Perl programming. Linux/UNIX, Windows and Mainframe platforms are explored along with middleware, messaging architecture and firm-specific technology to enable the development of multitiered cross-platform applications. The Infrastructure Engineering and Operations track explores the enterprise infrastructure that supports our business. The program is directed toward developing excellent engineering, operations and client skills to support the global enterprise infrastructure for the firm. The program presents a variety of infrastructure technologies from operating systems to enterprise solutions for disk volume management, storage, security and high availability. In addition to configuring and stress-testing generic infrastructure, the program also explores Morgan Stanley’s proprietary technologies for enterprise Linux/UNIX and Windows. A key theme throughout is systems design and automation. The curriculum consists of in-depth training in computer fundamentals, networks, databases, proprietary systems, hardware, Linux/UNIX and Windows, middleware, software management and administration, automation, and working within the complex technical environment of Morgan Stanley. Developing Your Career After the program, you will join individual teams within Technology where you will have a defined role and opportunity to make a contribution to our business. The firm offers plenty of ongoing training opportunities to develop your technical and professional skills and the enormous breadth of roles provides great potential for a diverse career. Requirements A degree in any subject is considered and you must have a demonstrated interest in technology. A Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related science or engineering discipline that is particularly relevant. Consideration for our training program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 (United States) or Class degree 2.1 (United Kingdom) or equivalent in Europe and Asia. Distributed Systems Development track Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree in Computer Science, or a degree in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or Physics. Candidates entering the program should be comfortable with Linux/UNIX and Windows, competent in C or C++ (or Java or C#); have experience of some object-oriented development; and have a good comprehension of data structures, algorithms and complexity theory. Application Development and Integration track Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree in any subject. Candidates’ competence in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, C# or VB) is important as it demonstrates an individual’s aptitude for computer technology, and indicates that they understand what a job in this area might entail. Infrastructure Engineering and Operations track Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or a degree in Science/ Engineering. Candidates should have a reasonable understanding of Linux/UNIX, Windows, and networking, and should have an appreciation of current leading technologies. Experience in building and maintaining systems and networks would be ideal. However, even the informal experience of stripping down and building PCs indicates the kind of technical competence and motivation required for this track. Technology Summer Interns are recruited and placed on a specific development or infrastructure team for the duration of the internship. You will solve business problems that are unique to a market-leading institution, and you will be using innovative technology to do so. More than 50,000 employees and many customers need easy access to our back-end platforms. Our software is developed on Windows, UNIX and Linux, using Java, C++, C# and Perl. Our developers leverage third-party infrastructure as well as infrastructure developed in-house - relational databases, global XML/SOAP messaging infrastructure, high-availability clusters, and massively scalable distributed systems. Former Summer Interns have worked on projects involving our enterprise portal, wireless access, or components of our many trading and risk-reporting systems using various technologies, such as .NET, JSP, Java Servlets and SOAP. High-performing Summer Interns may receive an invitation to interview for a full-time position as a Morgan Stanley technologist in the Technology Training Program. Summer Interns who have excelled in the program but will not be graduating in the upcoming year may be invited to participate in the following year’s summer program. The program commences with an introduction to the securities business and the Morgan Stanley Technology division. An overview of the Morgan Stanley technical environment, systems and infrastructure is provided. Throughout the program, Summer Interns may enroll in additional on-site training classes to sharpen their skills in the technologies relevant to their internship. A weekly speaker series provides Summer Interns with the perfect forum to learn and discuss emerging trends and developments in technology and finance with senior managers from the firm. To smooth the transition from classroom to the corporate environment, Summer Interns are typically paired with Morgan Stanley technologists who serve as mentors. In many instances, mentor relationships continue well beyond the end of the program. Moreover, frequent social activities throughout the internship allow for networking opportunities with Technology officers, associates and peers.
