An overview of this program’s objectives and how you can benefit Morgan Stanley's Operations Division is responsible for the post-execution trade processing and internal controls from trade entry through settlement and custody. It is the functional heart of all of Morgan Stanley's activities, playing a key role in ensuring that the firm delivers services and execution that meet the market-leading standards.

Operations Division covers an enormous range of activities, from managing operational risk and efficient and accurate transaction settlement to improving business processes and working with Technology to realize the full potential of our IT systems.

The Analyst Program in Operations

How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

We are looking for full-time Analysts to join us in the Operations Division. You will get the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in the Fixed Income, Commodities, Equity, Listed Derivatives, Prime Brokerage or Private Wealth Management businesses to process complex transactions to solve operational problems, respond to business issues and client needs, assist in risk management, conduct revenue analysis and participate in firm re-engineering projects.

Our training program equips Analysts with the knowledge and skills to provide a solid foundation on which to build a successful career in Operations, including:

 The Summer Analyst/Intern Program in Operations
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Asia Operations in Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney offers an Intern Program for undergraduate students. We look for participants in the program to work side by side with full-time employees, providing support for a wide range of Operations' day-to-day work as well as projects.

Working with the group's manager, the interns typically set challenging goals for completion during the internship. Interns would have the opportunity to further develop skills with on-the-job and classroom training. Interns would also typically be supported by a partner – someone who will help them become comfortable with the firm.

Requirements

Candidates can be studying for a degree in any discipline, but must have a strong academic record. You must have basic computing skills, particularly familiarity with Excel. You must be able to stay in the country of your internship for the duration of the program. Hong Kong and Singapore interns need to be in their final year in school. Students wishing to intern in Sydney must have the right to live and work in Australia .

 The Year-Round Internship Program in Operations
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Asia Operations in Hong Kong offers a 7 months Internship Program for undergraduate students. We look for participants in the program to work side by side with full-time employees, providing support for a wide range of Operations' day-to-day work as well as projects.

Through performing daily duties and targeted training, interns will learn how securities business are supported, processed and controlled. You will have the opportunity to participate in technology renovation and process improvement projects to create capacity, enhance risk control and increase connectivity with clients. You will also gain a good understanding of regulations governing the operation of the business.

Institutional Operations in Asia

Trade Support groups are responsible for prompt and accurate capture and reconciliation of agency and proprietary trade executions with regional exchanges and brokers.

Client Service acts as the liaison between institutional sales, traders, clients and settlement operations. The group resolves trade disputes and handles client issues including account opening, trade booking and confirmation.

Settlements moves securities and cash to settle trades with stock exchanges, brokers and clients in addition to monitoring Morgan Stanley’s books and records.

Collateral Management monitors the activity of those clients transacting collateralized business. This includes margin lending where the client borrows money to purchase securities which are held by Morgan Stanley as collateral for the loan.

Position Services is responsible for the processing of corporate actions, such as dividends, for stocks and bonds held by Morgan Stanley or its clients.

Global Network Management manages our external custody & clearing infrastructure through effective relationships, risk and expense management.

Strategic Technology Development enhances efficiency and client service by developing standardized, centralized, renovated systems for trade and post-trade processing without manual intervention. This includes sales and trading systems through to risk and settlement systems.

The Internship Program in Operations in Sydney

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and motivated undergraduates to join Operations in Sydney as part of a 10-month Internship Program. An internship provides you with a thorough overview of our industry and our Firm's values, and the challenges and opportunities you can expect from a Morgan Stanley career. It is a chance to experience the excitement of working in finance and in the markets. It is also a crucial step to your career planning and career success.

The Program will commence in January 2009 and you will be required to work full time (approx 37.5 hours per week) from January to February, reducing to 20 hours per week during semester time (generally between 9am to 1pm or 4pm to 8pm per day).

You must be an undergraduate student (penultimate year) studying finance, with a strong academic record. Oral and written fluency in English is essential. In addition, you will need to display the following qualities:

  • You have strong analytical and numerical skills that put you at ease with financial data
  • You are driven to achieve results and will push yourself to perform well under pressure and against tight deadlines
  • You are a committed team player with the ability to manage a wide range of responsibilities
  • You display a keen interest in finance and desire to have a career within Operations.
