Analyst Program

A DAY IN THE LIFE

I chose to start my career in Financial Services because…
this industry is known for its diverse opportunities and exciting environment. It’s rewarding and lively, and Morgan Stanley was at the top of my list.

I selected Finance because…
I am able to apply my business and accounting skills in a financial context and understand the inner workings of the Firm’s finances. The size of Morgan Stanley and its Finance division gives me many opportunities to get involved and learn. The complexity of the work draws people from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly finance, accounting, economics and math majors, and the work is highly valued by Senior Management; the analysis influences their decision-making.

As a Finance Analyst…
I needed a strong academic background and advanced quantitative and technical skills including knowledge of Excel and Access. I had to be able to synthesize information, distill relevant facts and reach logical conclusions. Strong communication skills and teamwork were essential from the start, and I had to show I could contribute to challenging assignments. In meetings, I improved my confidence, presentation skills and reputation as a very knowledgeable Analyst. Through team collaboration, my ability to negotiate, communicate and influence a project’s direction has grown significantly.

A typical day…
usually begins between 8 - 9 a.m. Some work is driven by regular processes such as daily Profit & Loss (P&L) positions, or monthly or quarterly corporate or regulatory reporting cycles. Other work is project-based so it varies, and I enjoy being kept on my toes.

The best parts of my job is…
the people and the environment. This Firm is full of motivated professionals who challenge me. I’ve worked with colleagues at all levels and gained exposure to Senior Management. I own my work and know that what I do every day matters. I have been delivering analysis and building client relationships right from the start.

Many former Analysts have gone on to…
other Finance roles, broader projects, or Risk Management positions.
