In its spring 2003 issue, Family Digest magazine named Morgan Stanley as one of its "Best Companies for African Americans." Morgan Stanley was the only investment banking firm included in the publication's survey. The article features the Firm's Global Head of Diversity, Marilyn F. Booker.

Family Digest magazine provides information and ideas on professional and lifestyle issues for the African-American community. To compile the list of best workplaces for African-Americans, Family Digest surveyed more than 400 companies in three key areas: recruitment of African-Americans, advancement of African-American managers and work-life balance.

Each company completed a comprehensive survey, which included questions about employee demographics, recruitment of African-Americans, work-life programs and policies, spending with minority-owned companies and donations to charities that benefit minorities.

Other companies that made the Family Digest list include CIGNA Corporation, Kraft Foods, Marriott International, Johnson & Johnson and Proctor & Gamble.

Family Digest hosted its first annual awards breakfast ceremony on February 21 for the honorees. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was represented by Michael C. Smith - Assistant Commissioner for New York City, stated in a letter that "These exemplary companies are being honored here today because of their commitment to supporting and promoting diversity within the workplace. Their dedication to ensuring that African-Americans are successful members of the company and are provided with a safe and enjoyable work environment is commendable."

Percy Sutton, former Manhattan Borough President, Civil Rights Activist and co-founder of Inner City Broadcasting, also participated in the awards ceremony. Mr. Sutton commended Morgan Stanley and the other recipients for their efforts in providing an environment that fosters the advancement of Black professionals in Corporate America. Marilyn Booker accepted the award on behalf of Morgan Stanley.
