The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition recently received the Best Documentary Award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures (NBR). The NBR is a film appreciation society that has been presenting awards for Best Film since 1920 in order "to increase public awareness of the meritorious aspects of movies." This is now considered the oldest of the best picture polls.

The film is the culmination of several years of collaboration between Morgan Stanley and film Director/Co-Producer George Butler. The film's story follows Shackleton and his 27 men attempting to traverse Antarctica and finding themselves marooned for 635 days in the harsh cold. After a treacherous rescue mission, every man survived.

Winners of the NBR are chosen by combining the full votes of the 13 members who sit on the Exceptional Photoplay Committee and fractional votes from 90 additional judges who belong to adjunct screening panels. The NBR awards gala will take place on January 7, at Tavern on the Green in New York City.

Other award recipients include Steven Spielberg for the NBR Billy Wilder Award for excellence in direction and John Voight for the Career Achievement Award.
