Morgan Stanley took top honors in the 13th annual Global Custodian survey of prime brokers. The Firm took 87 out of the 90 "Best In Class" awards for quality.
"This is an outstanding performance by Morgan Stanley," the editors said. "The firm is strong every year, but in 2006 it leads the overall survey rankings in six out of nine service areas and comes second or third in the rest. It wins top ratings in every region and client category, as well as on a global scale." As the editors noted, Morgan Stanley is one of a handful of global prime brokers, with substantial operations in New York, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. "Last year the firm put on a lot of business in Asia, and one client declares Morgan Stanley 'unrivaled in their field' there," the magazine reported. "On the basis of this performance, it is not just in Asia that Morgan Stanley is unrivaled." The survey, conducted with assistance from Greenwich Associates, asked hedge funds to rate prime brokers on a scale of one to seven, one being the lowest, seven the highest, in 55 questions divided into nine services areas:
