In its October 15, 1999 issue, Institutional Investor released its 1999 All-America Research Team, in which Morgan Stanley secured three additional positions (53) versus last year (50). In a tight race for the top spot, Morgan Stanley placed third overall, three positions behind Merrill Lynch (56) and two positions behind Salomon Smith Barney (55). However, on a weighted average basis (assigning a rank of 4 to first teamers, 3 to second teamers, 2 to third teamers, and 1 to runners-up), Morgan Stanley earned second place with 136 points only one point behind Merrill Lynch (137) and 11 points in front of Salomon Smith Barney (125).
Morgan Stanley outpaced the remainder of the Street by a wide margin, placing a full 10 positions ahead of 4th-ranked Goldman Sachs (who lost seven positions compared to 1998) and 13 ahead of 5th-ranked CSFB. On a weighted basis, Morgan Stanley was 41 points ahead of Goldman and 50 points ahead of CSFB.
This year's poll is based on the opinions of approximately 2,300 individuals, representing approximately 90% of the top 100 accounts in the II300 (Institutional Investor's listing of the largest institutions and money management firms in the U.S.), and about 65% of the complete II300.
