In addition to receiving the top score in Institutional Investor's 1998 All-America Research Team Poll (on a weighted basis), Morgan Stanley's Equity Research analysts were also recognized for their proficiency in their primary activities: picking stocks, estimating corporate earnings, acquiring knowledge of their industries, being responsive to clients' requests and initiating timely calls to investors. In addition, some Morgan Stanley analysts were listed as "up-and-coming."
Morgan Stanley's Paul Brooke, a first-teamer in Health Care/Pharmaceuticals, and Charles Phillips, Jr., a first-teamer in Server & Enterprise Software, were recognized for their earnings estimates. Brooke has appeared on the All-America Health Care/Pharmaceuticals team for all but one of the past 19 years, and Phillips has also "dominated [his] category since its inception five years ago," states II.
Phillips was also named to II's list of leaders in industry knowledge, which II lists as the number one attribute that respondents address in assessing the worth of a securities firm no matter what the size of the respondents' assets.
Anand Iyer and team, first-teamers in Convertibles, were cited for their accessibility and responsiveness II mentions that Iyer "has added a weekly to his product line, which already included a daily fax, a monthly statistics handbook on 1,500 convertibles, a monthly earnings calendar and an annual strategy-cum-recommended-portfolio document. Iyer moved up one place to first this year.
In addition, for a section called "Next Generation," II asked poll respondents to name the best up-and-coming analysts in the industries they cover. Morgan Stanley analysts received the following mentions:
| Brokers & Asset Managers | | Henry McVey |
| Data Networking | | Christopher DePuy |
| Food | | John Renwick |
| Service & Enterprise Hardware | | Thomas Kraemer |
| Telecom Equipment | | Alkesh Shah |
II notes that 15 of last year's 35 up-and-coming analysts were named to 1998's All-America Research Team.
