The Weekly Economist, a financial magazine published by the Mainichi Newspaper, conducted its second annual poll of Japanese equity research. Morgan Stanley Japan had 18 ranked analysts ranked in 20 sectors, including three top rankings, four second-place and three third-place finishes.

Although the poll does not include team rankings, aggregating the individual votes would suggest that the Firm has moved into second place with 3,168 votes. The Weekly Economist conducted the survey in July and August by sending questionnaires to fund managers at 108 companies (investment trust, investment advisory, life insurance, non-life, city banks, long term credit banks and trust banks), including foreign affiliated firms in Japan. Companies were asked to select first, second and third-ranking analysts for 22 industry sectors, economists, strategists and technical analysts. The votes were allocated based on the total assets under management; the 13 largest companies were allocated ten votes, while remaining companies were given five votes. The response rate was 49% (of the total 605 surveys, 296 were returned). Analysts were awarded three points for each first ranking, two points for second and one point for third. Total number of points scored determined analysts' rankings for each sector. Ranking is shown through seventh place, while those ranked eighth and below were listed as honorable mentions.
