Results from the Thomson Reuters Extel 2011 annual survey, released June 15, 2011, reflected strong gains and continued momentum for Morgan Stanley European Research. The Firm ranked No. 2 in Leading Pan-European Brokerage Firm for Equity Sectors Research and No. 3 in Leading Pan-European Brokerage for Equity & Equity-linked Research — both up from No. 4 in 2010. Additionally, Morgan Stanley ranked No. 4 in emerging EMEA Research, up from No. 8 the previous year.
The number of top-three sector teams also increased from 14 to 20, adding further momentum to Research's awards.
Newly recognized teams included Metals & Mining (No. 1), Banks (No. 2), Insurance (No. 2), Technology (No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5), Autos (No. 3), Chemicals (No. 3), Capital Goods (No. 3) and Food Retail (No. 3). The Firm also landed the No. 1 position in the new Oil Services category.
Perennial top teams continued to dominate, including Diversified Financials (No. 1), Transportation (No. 1), Leisure (No. 1), Medtech (No. 1), Pharma (No. 1), Oil & Gas (No. 1), Media (No. 2), Strategy (No. 2), Telecommunications Services (No 2), Economics (No. 3), and Food Producers (No. 3).
The Firm also captured 16 top-three positions in Specialist Sales; No. 1 rankings in Corporate Access, Equity Derivatives Sales, Derivatives Trading & Execution, Convertibles Sales; and the No. 3 spot in Equity Trading & Execution.
The Thomson Reuters Extel Survey Awards recognize the best buy-side firms, brokerage houses and investor relations teams throughout Europe and Asia. The Pan-European survey is the largest of its kind with over 7,500 participants from 62 countries that cast more than 250,000 individual votes.
Award winners are determined to be "best in class" by the judges and in command of their industry, analytical rigor and dedication to client service. The Thomson Reuters Extel Awards are coveted within the investment community as they represent the independent endorsement of each winner's audience and customers.
