UK Sunday Times Honors Morgan Stanley in "100 Best Companies to Work For 2002"

Morgan Stanley ranked #21.

The UK's Sunday Times newspaper recently published its ranking of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For 2002," the publication's guide to the best employers in Britain.

Supported by the UK Department of Trade & Industry, the survey profiles the best companies in the UK, ranked on the basis of employee feedback regarding management, working conditions and working culture. Morgan Stanley ranked #21 on the list.

"Our placement in the Sunday Times Top 25 is a great barometer of our progress in becoming First Choice for employees," said Tamsin Rowe, Director of Human Resources, Europe. "We're pleased with our placement in the survey, and can use the results to work toward an even better ranking next year."

The survey shows that the best companies have stimulating workplaces where their staff feel motivated and valued. Patricia Hewitt, UK Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, commented: "There is clear evidence that companies that respect and value their staff and make the business environment a pleasant one are more productive and more profitable. I am pleased so many of the companies in the top 100 have embraced family-friendly policies, increased flexible working patterns and developed more comfortable working environments, while still remaining competitive."

The companies that participated in the survey represented a cross-section of businesses, ranging in size from 250 to over 100,000 employees and in turnover from £14 million to £23 billion. The list included public and privately-owned companies and partnerships, and both UK and foreign-owned firms.

From the financial services sector, 20 companies featured in the list, including seven insurance firms. The financial services companies featured in the top 50 included Goldman Sachs (8), JLT Risk Solutions (10), Capital One (12) and American Express (45).

The UK offices plan to use the results of this survey to make the Firm an even better place to work. If you have any comments or ideas as to how we can reach our goal of becoming First Choice for employees, please submit your suggestions.

Survey Methodology
The survey was compiled by Great Place to Work UK Ltd (GPWUK) and written by the San Francisco-based authors and journalists, Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz, who also generate the U.S. version of the list, published in Fortune magazine.

Some 1,300 companies were invited to apply this year, nearly 250 of which expressed an interest in participating. 167 went through the full evaluation process.

The researchers canvassed the views of 250 randomly-selected employees at each participating firm, each of whom completed a survey containing 58 detailed questions about their workplaces. The questions were designed to evaluate trust in management, pride in work and the company, staff satisfaction and camaraderie. In addition, each firm provided detailed information about its company structure, ownership and employee benefits and answered a series of questions relating to the firm's culture.

Companies were ranked on a 175-point scale. The majority of those points (125) were allocated based on the employee questionnaires. The remaining 50 points were based on GPWUK's evaluation of the company's policies, programs and culture. Only 50 points separated the #1 ranked company from the #100 company.
