In its October 2000 issue, Institutional Investor posted its results for the Institutional Investor 2000 All-American poll. A combination of talent and hard work catapulted Morgan Stanley to a tie for the No. 1 spot, up from third in 1999. We gained two team positions, reaching 55 versus last year's 53, and tied with Merrill Lynch, which lost one position from last year's 56. This year's poll ended in the first tie for the top spot in the 29-year history of the II rankings.

Morgan Stanley outpaced the remainder of the Street by a wide margin, placing a full 9 positions ahead of 3rd ranked Salomon Smith Barney (which lost 9 positions from 1999) and 17 positions ahead of 4th ranked CSFB. Tying for 5th place were Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and Goldman, Sachs, with 35 slots each.

On a weighted average basis (assigning 4 points to first teamers, 3 points to second teamers, 2 points to third teamers, and 1 point to runners-up), Morgan Stanley earned second place with 127 points, behind Merrill Lynch with 143 points. Ranking 3rd through 6th on this basis were Salomon Smith Barney (111 points), DLJ (82), Goldman, Sachs (80), and CSFB (74).

We offer a special nod to first-timers on II's All-America roster: Jeff Camp (1st team, Internet infrastructure & services), Lloyd Byrne (runner up, oil & gas E&P), Colette Fleming (RU, wireless services), Dennis Higgins (RU, natural gas), Pete Kennedy (RU, CLECs), Gillian Munson (RU, PC hardware), Ken Posner (RU in both mortgage finance and specialty finance), and Susan Quilty (RU, retailing/hardlines). Howard Penney, a repeat performer in the restaurants category, also debuted in the small companies category this year.

This year's poll included more than 2,500 individuals from 90% of the top 100 accounts in the II 300 (the magazine's ranking of the largest U.S. institutions and money management firms). The table on the following page shows our industry-by-industry performance. Please join us in congratulating these analysts and all the other members of research and sales who made this great showing possible.
