In its March 1, 1999, issue, Fortune magazine ranked companies across and within industries on their "corporate reputations." Once again, Morgan Stanley scored well, ranking second among the most admired companies in the securities industry. Morgan Stanley moved up from sixth place in Fortune's 1997 Most Admired rankings of consumer credit firms.
Fortune offers the following explanation of its ranking methodology:
"To create the 55 industry lists, Fortune relied solely on the insiders. [Clark Martire & Bartolomeo] asked [more than 10,000 executives, directors and securities analysts] to rank companies in their own industry on eight criteria, ranging from long-term investment value to social responsibility."
