On Monday, February 15th, Institutional Investor announced its 1999 All-Europe Research Team, ranking analysts from 36 firms in 75 industries and investment specialties. In all, the opinions of 982 investment experts at more than 350 institutions around the world are reflected in these results. With a net gain of 28 team positions, Morgan Stanley jumped to 3rd place from 11th in 1998, with seven first-team positions, 11 second-team, 11 third-team and eight runner-up positions. Prior to this result, Morgan Stanley had never been ranked higher than 9th in the European Institutional Investor poll. It is an outstanding achievement that reflects the significant amount of hard work that everyone has put in and the effective partnership between sales and research.

In the editorial accompanying the results, Charles Scott, director of European Research, pointed to the fact that in 1998, Morgan Stanley expanded its European equity universe by one third, adding new and growth companies and breaking down expanding sectors such as telecommunications and technology. We also enlarged our quant and credit analysis capabilities and coverage of the UK "We've increased the number of sector analysts by nearly 50 percent and the number of stocks covered by more than 50 percent," he said, "but we're still relatively small."
