Morgan Stanley Wins Top Ranking Among Foreign Firms in the Mainichi Economist Analyst Poll

The Weekly Economist, a financial magazine published by the Mainichi Newspaper, the third largest national daily in Japan, conducted its third annual poll of Japanese equity research.

The Weekly Economist, a financial magazine published by the Mainichi Newspaper, the third largest national daily in Japan, conducted its third annual poll of Japanese equity research. Although the poll does not include team rankings, aggregating the individual votes would suggest that the Firm has maintained its top ranking among non-Japanese firms with 3,012 votes — behind Nomura Securities with 4,118. Nikko Salomon (2,852) was in third place, followed by Merrill Lynch (2,486), Goldman Sachs (2,057), Warburg Dillon Read (1,420) and Daiwa (1,272), respectively.

The survey was conducted in July 1999. Questionnaires were sent to operations managers at 102 major investment trusts, investment advisors, life and non-life insurance companies and banks (including foreign-owned businesses) operating in Japan. The number of votes a given company was allocated was based on its operating capital and other criteria.

Consequently, 13 firms had ten votes, and the other 89 companies received five votes each. A total of 252 valid votes (44% valid-response rate) received by the deadline were then tabulated.

Respondents to the questionnaire were asked to list their top three choices of economists, strategists and technical strategists in 24 sectors as appropriate, based on the performances of those individuals over the previous year. A weighted scoring system was used, with three points going to a first place vote, two to a second place vote and one to a third place vote. The rankings were then made on the basis of total number of points received by each individual. For all the categories, individuals ranked 15th or above all had at least ten points.
