On June 7, 1999, Morgan Stanley's Jim Tilley and Jim Liang presented the first-ever Morgan Stanley Information Technology Leadership Award for Global Commerce at the 1999 Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program. This Morgan Stanley-sponsored award recognizes individuals whose vision, leadership and commitment to innovative excellence have made a critical contribution to the success of global systems that impact society.
The award was presented to Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell Computer Corporation.
"It's very exciting to be a part of the Smithsonian Institution's ongoing efforts to capture the history of the global information technology revolution that is now occurring. We are proud to recognize Michael Dell for his leadership in the development of information technology which enhances global commerce," stated Jim Tilley, CIO of Morgan Stanley's Institutional Businesses and Private Wealth Management. Jim Liang, co-head of Investment Banking's Technology group, added, "Michael Dell has built a company based on a simple, but extraordinarily powerful idea to provide customers with a choice. In a business where it is difficult to differentiate your product due to the standardization of microprocessors and operating systems, Dell Computer has truly revolutionized its industry and changed the basis of competition to superior service."
Morgan Stanley participates in the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program through other means as well. Morgan Stanley's Merritt Lutz is a member of the program's Chairmen's Committee, which comprises information technology industry leaders around the world. The Committee oversees the program and judges the award nominations and finalists.
In addition to the Leadership Award, Morgan Stanley nominated organizations for awards in the categories of Business & Related Services, Education & Academia, Medicine, and Science. Case studies of these nominees and of the finalists will become part of the Permanent Research Collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.
