In its March 1999 edition, Institutional Investor named its top large cap and high growth stock pickers for 1998. Morgan Stanley's European telecommunications analyst Paul Marsch made II's large cap Home-Run Hitter list for his positive predictions for Colt Telecom Group.
Institutional Investor's 18th annual survey relied on annual return data compiled by FactSet Research Systems to determine the top large-cap and high-growth performers. This year, ten out of the eleven stocks selected achieved at least a 300 percent return, and all but two of the top-performing stocks (including Colt Telecom) were of Internet-related companies. The magazine asked the investor relations departments and CFOs of each selected company to identify the analysts that had made the "earliest and most enthusiastic calls on their stock."
Marsch's enthusiasm for Colt Telecom arose from its first-place finish in his survey of 400 telecommunications managers in the UK on the quality of new telecommunications firms. "We couldn't find anything bad about the company," states Marsch.
